Biography

Arshia Sana is an Assistant Professor of Law at JGLS. Her work sits at the intersection of international law, human rights, and social justice, with a sustained focus on the rights of religious and gender minorities. Her research examines how international human rights frameworks can be translated into lived protections for marginalised communities in India and beyond.

With a solid academic foundation, Prof. Sana holds a B.A. LL.B. (Hons.) from Dr. Ram Manohar Lohia National Law University, an LL.M. from Hidayatullah National Law University, and a second LL.M. from the University of Westminster, London. She qualified UGC-NET in 2019, while doing her first Masters. Her professional journey has been marked by her contributions as an Assistant Professor and a Research Fellow at the Center for Study of the United Nations, JGLS.

Her scholarship has travelled widely: she has presented her work “Women-led Protests in India: A study with reference to anti-CAA Shaheen Bagh Movement” at the Max Planck Institute, Heidelberg, on “Virtual Criminal Justice System in India” at Lund University in Sweden, on “Customising the Western Concept of Hate Crime for India” at the Academic Council on the United Nations System (ACUNS) in Tokyo and that on “Legal Discrimination” at University of Cape Town. Her research on "Studying Hate crime in India underpinning International Human Rights Law" underscores her commitment to examining contemporary legal challenges.

Her co-authored article on the Uniform Civil Code and gender justice for Muslim women is published in the Manchester Journal of Transnational Islamic Law and Practice, and her current research studies hate crime in India through the lens of international human rights law. An active member of ACUNS, Prof. Sana continues to build cross-border academic collaborations. Having received offers from leading universities in the United Kingdom, she decided to pursue a Ph.D. at JGLS with a prospective collaboration with the University of Groningen.
