Biography

Prof. (Dr.) Aveek Chakravarty is an Assistant Professor of Law at Jindal Global Law School, O.P. Jindal Global University. He is also the Assistant Director at the University’s Centre for International Investment and Trade Laws (CIITL). Prof. Chakravarty’s research has primarily centred around international investment law, arbitration, as well as banking and financial regulation. He completed his doctoral thesis in law at the University of Turin (2021) which was fully-funded by a Marie-Skłodowska-Curie Actions Grant awarded by the European Commission. Under the doctoral research grant, Prof. Chakravarty also carried out research on European trade and investment agreements as a member of the EUTIP-ITN consortium. The research outcomes of the project and individual research papers were presented before various government and academic fora across Europe and Asia. Prof. Chakravarty’s dissertation on arbitral discretion in compensation awarded by investment tribunals was awarded a cum laude distinction by the University of Turin.

Before academia, Dr. Chakravarty practised as a litigation associate in private chambers in New Delhi, focusing primarily on contracts, regulatory law, consumer law and commercial arbitration. He previously completed a Master’s Degree in International Commercial Law, Contract and Dispute Resolution from the University of Turin (2016) and a Bachelor’s Degree in Law from the National Law Institute University, Bhopal (2015). 

At JGLS, Prof. Chakravarty teaches both core courses and electives to undergraduate students based around his research interests in commercial law. He has taught and supervised dissertations for graduate students in investment law, banking, and international arbitration. Besides academics, he also coaches University teams for domestic and international moot courts, arbitrations, and negotiations. Prof. Chakravarty has also served as peer-reviewer in Indian law journals such as the Indian Arbitration Law Review and NLS Business Law Review.
